How to dig a proper hole?

  • How to dig a proper hole?

Here is a typical example of this question asked.

"Ok so how do you dig a proper hole and what kind of shovel do you use??
I figured on filling in the hole, just like Golf!!!

Thanks,
Inquirer"

Answer from Webmaster: "See picture at bottom of this page. It is also listed in several detector manuals, see this link. (from one of the Tesoro manuals) (Click Here)
There is other good info in these manuals, like how to swing your stick."

Answer from Larry C.: "THIS IS a most needed post. I for one will attest to that! You see, some people have no scruples when it comes to what size digger they use on public property as opposed to digging on private property, ( unless you have express permission from prop. owner ) I personally would not recommend taking a backhoe to the White House's front lawn, nor would I be expected to use a garden trowel deep in the woods, In either case " FILL YOUR DAM HOLES " Mind you now, their are some people who wield these God forsaken " ditch diggers" that know what they are doing, and can make the area look pretty decent, but you can still tell where they've been. Heck, I use a much smaller digger and you can definately tell where I've been, that is only cause I don't use a dropcloth and you can see the ring of dirt around my holes..... What we are talking about here is...... People who are too dam lazy to fill their holes, PERIOD! They leave them wide open and often with the trash they dug, right next to or very near the hole. After all, The Motto of our club is....." WE LEAVE IT CLEANER THAN WE FOUND IT! " I apologize to you about ranting on like this, but I get carried away at times, just ask anyone in this club. I represent: Ms. Belle, Lady Lola, Ms. Lizzie, and Mr. Hines. to name a few. It does'nt matter what machine you buy, just remember proper digging ettiquette."

Answer from Clarence H.: "I'am with you larry on this one. Fill the holes and pick up all trash . I wish everyone just left a ring of dirt!"

Answer from Dennis R.: "I don't like to dig a hole at all. I use a screw driver or knife to pinpoint and just make a slice and finger out the coin. When I do need to dig, I use the drop cloth and place all the dirt on this as it makes the coin easier to find. I place the grass plug on top and tamp it down. If it's dry and a lawn or park picnic area, I won't dig a plug-period. While water hunting I get sick seeing where most hunters have dug a hole and just left it there thinking waves will cover it. This gets us thrown out of swim areas faster then anything we do. Doesn't matter how much trash we remove, someone complains of a hole in the sand and it closes the beach to us. In the Oakland County Parks we use a scoop like a french fry basket. It can't dig a hole but still retreives the goodie and doesn't even discolor the sand."

Answer from Joe C.: "Here is a video that will show you how it is done so that you leave the grass roots primarily intact and reinsert the plug with little evidence you have been there-which is the point to the whole procedure:  (Click Here)"
